Mayo: north-coast headlands, Achill and Westport

Choose the part of Mayo that draws you most, with another corner saved for a return visit.

A northern Mayo beginning

Downpatrick Head, near Ballycastle, gives a north-coast visit a striking landmark. Plan the outing around current local information and the conditions on the day. You can spend time looking at the landscape without approaching an exposed edge or adding a demanding walk.

An Achill break

Achill offers a different base and deserves time of its own. Decide whether the visit is about the scenery, a heritage interest or simply being in one place for a few days. Research any activity separately: a beach photograph does not tell you whether entering the water is appropriate on your date.

Stay around Westport

Westport gives another Mayo trip a town setting, with Westport Estate and the wider county’s outdoor options to investigate. Check the precise experience or route you are interested in before booking. North Mayo, Erris, Achill and Westport do not all need to fit into one weekend. Staying near your chosen area leaves more time for the place and less for the road.
