Wild Atlantic Way 10: Achill and Westport

Give Achill’s coast and a Westport town stay their own places in a Mayo itinerary.
Keem Bay on Achill Island, County Mayo

A day on Achill

Achill is a substantial destination within the Atlantic journey. Use the island guide to choose a part of the coast or an activity before setting out. Keem Bay is a familiar image of the island, but conditions, parking and access still need attention on the day. A scenic photograph cannot tell you whether the sea is suitable to enter.

An evening in Westport

Westport offers a town-based contrast to time on the island. Choose accommodation with the evening in mind, especially if you want to eat out without another drive. Westport Estate is one possible visitor option in the wider area; check the current programme and what an individual booking includes.

Leaving Mayo

Achill and Westport need not compete for the same afternoon. Allow separate time if both are priorities, then plan the onward journey towards Killary and Connemara. A shorter list of commitments makes it easier to respond to Mayo’s weather and to enjoy the places where you have actually stopped.
