Wild Atlantic Way 18: Dingle and the Blasket story

Use Dingle as a peninsula base and visit the mainland centre that tells the story of the Blasket Islands.
Dingle Bay viewed from the harbour, County Kerry

A town and a peninsula

Dingle can be the centre of a short break in its own right. Start with the town guide, choose your accommodation and decide how much driving belongs in each day. Time around the town and harbour makes a different visit from a long loop of the peninsula, and both deserve room in the plan.

The mainland Blasket Centre

At Dún Chaoin, the Blasket Centre explores the islands’ community, language and literary heritage from the mainland. Check its seasonal opening arrangements before travelling. It is a complete cultural visit in its own right; you do not need to combine it with an island crossing to make the trip worthwhile.

If you want to cross

A journey to an island is a separate undertaking. Confirm the actual departure point, landing arrangements and return sailing with an operator, allowing for weather and cancellation. Keep a mainland alternative available and avoid fixing an essential onward connection immediately after a planned return.
