Wild Atlantic Way 04: Sliabh Liag and south-west Donegal

Visit the cliffs with a clear plan, then give south-west Donegal’s towns and communities some of your time.
The cliffs at Sliabh Liag, County Donegal

Plan the cliff visit

Sliabh Liag is the landscape that draws many visitors to this part of Donegal. Start with the Slieve League Cliffs Centre’s current information about visitor access and local arrangements. Conditions at an exposed cliff can be quite different from those in the village. A photograph taken on a calm day is a poor guide to what you may find.

Beyond the viewpoint

Ardara, Kilcar and Glencolmcille offer different starting points for exploring the wider south-west. The Donegal Gaeltacht guide helps place these communities in their regional context. Choose a local visit or craft stop with confirmed opening hours, and give it enough time to become part of the day rather than a hurried purchase on the way through.

Turning south

The onward journey leads towards Donegal town, Ballyshannon and Bundoran. Work out where you will finish before extending a drive along another coastal road. This is also a sensible point to pause the series and return another time: the next chapter follows Leitrim’s short coast before reaching Sligo.

Before you go

Check cliff access and weather with the visitor operator. Do not follow an unmarked cliff route or assume a suggested viewpoint is suitable for every visitor.
