Where to stay on the Atlantic: choosing a useful base

Choose accommodation around the days you want to have, including the parts after the driving stops.

Choose the area before the room

Put your main interest on a map, then look for somewhere that makes the journey manageable. Westport and Kenmare are two very different examples of towns worth researching as regional bases. Neither is a substitute for checking the actual distance to the places on your own list.

Think about the evening

Look beyond the room photograph. Can you walk to dinner, is the route suitable after dark, and will you need a taxi? Check parking, public transport and the arrival time with the accommodation. A peaceful location may be exactly what you want, provided you have planned how the evening will work.

Ask about the things that matter

Confirm steps, lift access, bathroom arrangements, bed configuration or other requirements directly. Broad labels such as family-friendly or accessible can cover very different facilities. A short, specific question before booking is more useful than an assumption made from a photograph.

Read what you are booking

Check the total price, what is included, cancellation terms and the identity of the business taking the booking. Save the confirmation and any important answers. Choose a base you can enjoy for more than a night when the itinerary allows; unpacking once can leave more time for the place outside the door.
